Helpful Hints

Here are some kitchen tips that I've picked up. I think there worth sharing and hope you'll find something that will help out at your house!

Tip #5 July 23rd, 2013
While visiting my mom I was reminded of this one.  If you burn something in a pan and it's hard to get off sprinkle it with baking soda and then a tablespoon or two of water.  It will become pasty and you just let it sit for half hour to an hour.  It usually comes right off wiping burnt part out easily.  If it's stubborn and still not coming off, add some water and put on the stove top simmering for about 15 minutes, this should definitely do the trick and burnt part should wipe off easily.  This is a great trick that I've used many times, thanks mom!

Tip #4 April 25th, 2013

If you have an avocado that is hard and you want it to ripen up fast, put it in a brown paper bag and fold the top of the bag closed.  Leave it for two or more hours and it should ripen up for you. - Heard it on the Rachel Ray Show

Tip #3 April 16th, 2013

Getting lemon juice out of a lemon that seems dry and without much juice, put half of the lemon in the microwave for 15 seconds, after zapping it you should be able to squeeze lemon juice out of it.  ~ Heard it on the Rachel Ray Show.

Tip #2 April 10th, 2013

To soften hard brown sugar, store in an air tight container and put a fresh piece of bread on top. Seal it and leave overnight.  If it's still hard the next day, just keep the bread in the sealed container with sugar for an extra day or two.  It should soften up. This same process can be done with an apple slice as well.

Tip #1 April 1st, 2013

To keep weevils from making themselves at home in your flour or rice, put one dried bay leaf in for every 5 lbs of flour, rice, etc. and store in an air tight container.  It should be bug free for a long time!  No fooling(ha ha).
